Before you embark on your journey, we’ve curated a list of our favorite hidden gems that you absolutely must visit while in Puglia.

1. Otranto

The striking contrast of colors in Otranto’s scenery is truly remarkable, from the vivid orange hues of the natural quarry to the crystal-clear blue waters along the coast. Despite being a small coastal town that can be traversed from east to west in just 15 to 20 minutes on foot, Otranto offers plenty to explore. Lose yourself in the labyrinthine streets, unwind on the serene and secluded beaches, and soak in the picturesque views. Then, treat yourself to a meal at one of the many excellent independent restaurants for a delightful culinary experience.

4. Torre Guaceto

Situated between Ostuni and Brindisi, Torre Guaceto offers the perfect setting for a leisurely stroll or bike ride. Designated as a World Wildlife Fund area, the reserve promises sightings of a diverse range of fascinating creatures, from the sea turtle recovery center to migratory birds. Unlike other destinations in Puglia, Torre Guaceto focuses less on beach beauty and more on showcasing the rural countryside and untamed Mediterranean vegetation. Nevertheless, the area boasts a stunning blue flag beach, often spacious throughout much of the year.

6. Casalabate’s Underwater Secret

Just beyond Casalabate, en route to Torre Rinalda, lies a true hidden gem—a perfect find for those seeking an “off the beaten path” experience in Puglia. Known mostly to locals, this beautiful area offers soft sands where you can spend the day and enjoy peaceful swims in the turquoise sea. Beneath the surface lies a remarkable shipwreck, sunk by the British Navy in 1941. Fortunately, the wreckage is easily visible in the shallow waters, allowing for swimming and exploration around it without the need for diving gear.

7. Grotta della Poesia

Located halfway between Otranto and Lecce, this cave, which forms a natural pool with stunning colors, is one of the most popular attractions in our beautiful Italy. The name “Grotta della Poesia” probably derives from the Greek term “Posìa,” meaning freshwater spring. It is believed that there was once a freshwater spring here, now no longer present. Like all enchanting places, however, this paradise is surrounded by stories and legends: it is said that a princess used to live here, who loved to dive and bathe in these waters. The Grotta della Poesia was only discovered in 1983 by the archaeologist Cosimo Pagliara.

In reality, there are two caves, quite close: the Grotta della Poesia Grande and the Grotta della Poesia Piccola, connected to each other by an underground karst complex. Initially, the entire area was covered by rocks, but due to the force of the sea waves, weathering, and karst phenomena, part of the rock covering collapsed. From this collapse, these natural pools came to light, which have attracted millions of tourists from around the world for years. And they still do.
